My Top Five
First of all, I want to start off by thanking you all for the wonderful feedback I received on my last blog post. The first step to progress is recognizing that you have a problem – for me, that would be a cashmere addiction; only then can you go on to make a plan about addressing that problem. All that being said, I’ve had many of you reach out to me about how to actually find sustainable cashmere brands – I knew I liked you guys! So, this week I’ve decided to round up my Top Five Sustainable Cashmere pieces. This way I can just help to make your holiday shopping a bit easier. If you’re going to give in to purchasing some lovely, comfy, cozy cashmere, might as well do it the right way.
ONE: Tricot – Recycled Cashmere Sweater
Tricot’s Recycled Cashmere Sweater is made from “wasted fibers from the cashmere clothes, a resource that would otherwise have been thrown away, and mixed with high quality virgin Cashmere fibers.” It’s manufactured at a small family-owned factory in Italy. Basically, this wonderfully cozy piece is sustainable and high-quality!
TWO: Naadam – The Essential $75 Cashmere Sweater
To start off, the price of this sweater is absolutely great for a cashmere piece – it is one of Naadam’s best-selling products. Naadam is known for its close relationship with its goat herders. This company works hard to ensure its goats are well cared for and protected.
THREE: Naked Cashmere – Silvia Sweater
Naked Cashmere is one of my very favorite cashmere brands. This company works primarily online and directly with its consumers in an attempt to make cashmere more affordable. Its cashmere carries many sustainability, fair trade and animal welfare certifications to ensure that customers are getting the best quality at the best price.
FOUR: Cuyana – Cashmere Mock Neck Sweater
Earlier in the year, I had the chance to speak with Megan O’Sullivan, Associate Manager on the Brand Marketing team at Cuyana. If you want to learn more about the brand and its ethos, be sure to check out that article. All that aside, Cuyana’s cashmere is Oeko-Tex certified, meaning its created so that no hazardous substances are present in the dyed, spun or woven material. Similar to Tricot, their pieces are produced at a luxury produced in Italy that ensures quality from start to finish.
FIVE: Riley Studio – Recycled Cashmere Sweater
I talked a lot about Riley Studio in my original blog post about the environmental implications of cashmere production. Created with Re.Verso™ yarn, this sweater is CO2 free and untreated. On top of that, Re.Verso™ yarn is made of pre-consumer textile waste – hence the “recycled” title. This is done in an effort to take some of the pressure off farmers and herd to constantly produce more and more cashmere. It is produced at a Cozy Knits factory in Scotland.
So, there you have it – five cashmere pieces that you can feel both good about buying and wearing! If you’re looking for a cashmere piece to put on your wish list this year, hopefully you’ll consider one of these sustainable options.
Bye for now,
McGee
