#VogueHope
A couple of weeks ago, I posted a blog entitled “The Hope Hypothesis.” In that post, I discussed a summer project I’ve been working on that focuses on the persistence of hope amongst Gen Zers despite the global crises we are facing (P.S. I’m almost finished!). I started that project because I feel like the media is flooded with negativity. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty that we need to be cautious, concerned and angry about, but we also need to allow room in both the media and our lives for hope and optimism. As I was scrolling through Instagram this morning, a post came up from Vogue. For the first time in its 128-year history, all 26 global editions of Vogue are publishing with a united theme of hope. As stated by Anna Wintour (2020):
We all need hope in our lives, now more than ever, so at this tumultuous time, Vogue decided to bring all the global editions together around this optimistic, humane, forward-looking theme. Hope may be hard to find at a moment of crisis, but it also feels more essential than ever. It’s part of our shared humanity, a source of delight and inspiration, and keeps us focused on a brighter future. (para. 2)
The global editions, appearing over the months of August and September, will feature letters of hope from celebrities, designers, activists and more, as well as essays on diversity and inclusion, the climate crisis and systemic racism amongst other topics (para. 3). Additionally, each edition will feature a “global Hope portfolio of imagery” selected by each editor-in-chief (para. 4). Inspired by Vogue’s Hope editions, I thought I would showcase five images that ignite a glimmer of hope within me.
I hope we all remember that, despite the clouds, the sun will rise again.
Bye for now,
McGee
